Fire Drill Instructions
To have an effective Fire/Life Safety Program, it is necessary that comprehensive training begiven to everyone in the building. Fire drills are required a minimum of once a year. Thepurposes of the fire drill are to instill in the minds of all occupants the correct proceduresnecessary to ensure the safety of life and the joint testing of building emergency equipmentand staff duties.FIRE DRILLS ARE FOR THE SAFETY AND PROTECTION OF ALLOCCUPANTS. Participation is mandatory.
Fire drills should be announced in advance: date and approximate time. For example:Tuesday, September 17th between 9 AM - 12 PM. This will help to uncover weaknesses.The fire drill should be a practice of the building’s emergency procedures. A fire drill wouldbegin with the sounding of the fire alarm on a selected floor.Observers (OfficeStaff/Security) should be stationed at strategic locations throughout the building to observethe actions of Suite/Floor Wardens, Monitors and occupants when the alarm sounds.
Observations will be made for:
- Quick response of all Suite/Floor Wardens and Monitors to their designated duties.
- Response and attitude of occupants in evacuating the floor.
- Closing of all office doors to help confine the fire and limit the spread of fire and smoke.
- Following correct evacuation procedures.
- Taking a head count at Safe Refuge Area.
- Reporting to Building Staff, the location of any occupants who are physicallyChallenged and that evacuation is complete.
CRITIQUE
- Points which should be covered: not hearing the alarm; fire equipment blocked orunusable; exits and hallways blocked; debris in stairwells; doors propped open; officedoors not closed; duties not understood or carried out; procedures for the physicallyimpaired and response of all occupants.
- All Suite/Floor Wardens shall turn in a completed fire drill report in keeping with therequirement for annual fire drill documentation.
REMEMBER: FIRE DRILLS ARE A LEARNING EXPERIENCE.
